Florence MacDonald, Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle has called upon Tory MP George Eustice to support calls to sack the Prime Minister’s chief Special Advisor, Dominic Cummings.
In an open letter written to the Camborne Redruth MP. the letter, Florence describes the media circus around Mr Cummings movements as “theatrics that could have been avoided” and a waste of “far too much of the Government’s time,” when they should be focused on keeping people safe and fighting the pandemic.
Florence asks Mr Eustice if he “thought it right of Mr Cummings to visit County Durham from London at the height of the Coronavirus lockdown” and calls upon Mr Eustice to support her call for Dominic Cummings to be “immediately sacked” by the Prime Minister.
Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey added:
“By failing to act, the Prime Minister undermines his own authority to lead the country through this appalling crisis, bringing his own judgement into question.
“The Prime Minister must come clean about what he knows and terminate Dominic Cummings’ contract. It is now clearer than ever that, once we are through this crisis, there must also be an independent inquiry to review the Government’s actions."
Florence's letter to George Eustice:
Dear George Eustice MP,
We have all seen a great deal in the news about the movements of Dominic Cummings which contradicts government advice. To be honest, this has taken up far too much of the government’s time, which should be focused on saving lives. The unnecessary theatrics could have been avoided if his actions had been responded to swiftly and appropriately in the first instance.
Whilst Cummings visited Durham – a nearly five-hour drive – from London, here in Cornwall we were urging people not to visit. We were aware that people might see it as a safer place to be, but in doing so risk spreading the virus. I am so thankful for all those who listened and followed the advice, even in challenging circumstances.
Do you think it was right of Dominic Cummings to visit County Durham from London at the height of the Coronavirus lockdown?
During his visit, you yourself, shared a number of statements reinforcing the governments’ advice. Most crucially, on April 1st:
‘Together we can beat this virus, but everyone has to continue to follow the Government’s guidance.’
And again, in the run up to Easter:
‘Easter is traditionally a time of year when families come together. This Easter is different, so this year we're asking everyone to please Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives. Everyone has to follow the guidelines, please do not travel, and please do Stay at Home.’
Dominic Cummings’ actions have worked against the efforts of our government and our efforts to keep Cornwall safe, whilst others have made huge sacrifices by following the government’s guidance.
Will you support my call for Cummings to be immediately sacked by the Prime Minister?
I look forward to your reply.
